Why Go To A Gaming Convention?
I have always pondered the ramifications of playing games at gaming conventions. I know why I run games at gaming conventions. But that’s not what this is really about.
There are some distinct features and benefits regarding participating in games at a gaming convention. Let’s take a look at some of them.
Camaraderie- This is a word that is one of the tenets of what Metro Detroit Gamers stands for. Not everybody has hundreds of friends that like board games or role-playing games. A gaming convention is a place to share stories and exploits of the adventures you have enjoyed while gaming. It’s about sharing those experiences to foster a communal spirit and justify the wonderful experiences we enjoy.
Discovery- There is a wide-reaching world of games from creative people to be played. Short of winning a big lotto prize, you can’t buy them all. Games at the conventions allow you the opportunity to play different games. I became an owner and huge fan of the Arkham Horror board game by watching and then playing the game at several gaming conventions.
Growth- Let’s look at this from a constructive perspective. Gaming works when you have different people to play with on a regular basis. Most groups on average have four players in their gaming groups. It’s a manageable size. But what happens if one or two players can’t make it? I favor running games for 4-7 players. It gives you as the game master the opportunity to creatively put the players in situations that challenge them by actually letting them go up against a more difficult encounter.
Learning- In a recent posting to the Savage Worlds Yahoo Group, one of the regular posters intends to run a gaming convention in Brazil. This person asked for some help and suggestions. One of the easiest ways to improve your gaming chops is to play and run games at conventions. You learn how to compress gaming adventures into three and a half hours of time when running. Playing you determine if the gaming system plays comfortably and whether the genre of the game inspires you to want more.

Marmalade Dog 18 will take place February 8-10; the date listed here is incorrect, or may have been a prior working date. Please check http://www.marmaladedog.org/ for updates. Happy Gaming!
Had a blast at UCon in Ann Arbor this year (10-28-12). Could only attend on Sunday, but played a fun game of After the Bomb (my character: a mutant lynx with ridiculously large ears, mental stun blast, and a crabby attitude) and a game of D&D Next run by that guru of gamemasters, Shane Harsch. Good times. The venue at the Eagle Crest in Ypsilanti was classy (now there’s a change) and the UCon staff did a superb job as always. Cheers to all and good gaming.
Are you taking events for WinterCon 2012 yet?
